First-build mistakes are not creative. They repeat, and they cluster in six places.

1. Not checking the measurements

Graphics card length, cooler height, radiator clearance. Manufacturers publish all three and cases publish their maximums. Discovering the incompatibility with everything unboxed is the most frustrating way to lose an afternoon.

2. Forgetting the processor power connector

There is an additional connector at the top of the board, separate from the main 24-pin. It is easy to miss. The machine gives no display, the fans spin, and the diagnosis wanders off toward memory or the graphics card for hours.

3. Skipping the bench test

Testing the assembly on the desk before screwing everything into the case feels like an unnecessary step. It stops feeling that way the first time something will not boot and you have to strip the machine to reach the part.

4. Mistaking a power supply fault for a thermal one

A machine that shuts off instantly under load, with no blue screen and no errors, is almost never a thermal problem — overheating throttles clocks long before it cuts power. That pattern is the signature of a supply tripping its protection on the graphics card's power spikes.

5. Leaving the memory profile off

Memory boots at a conservative default speed, not the one you paid for. The profile has to be enabled in the BIOS. Plenty of people run for years with memory below its rated specification and never find out.

6. Buying the power supply last, on price

It is the component everything else depends on and the first one cut when the budget tightens. The logic is backwards: it is the part whose failure can take others with it.
