On 16 April 2026 Meta announced a price rise across the Quest 3 range, effective from Sunday the 20th. It is an unusual move: consumer hardware gets cheaper over time, it does not get more expensive mid-life.

The figures

The 128 GB Quest 3S went from $300 to $350. The 256 GB model, from $400 to $450. And the 512 GB Quest 3 jumped a full hundred dollars, from $500 to $600.

Official accessories held their prices. Refurbished headsets did not: those went up too.

One piece of context softens the headline. The 512 GB Quest 3 launched at $650 in 2023 and was cut when the 3S arrived. The new $600 still sits below its launch price.

It is not the optics

The reasonable assumption when a headset gets more expensive is that something in the optical stack has gone up: pancake lenses, panels, the assembly that most defines the experience and costs the most to build. That is not what happened.

Meta was explicit about the cause: the global surge in the price of critical components, specifically memory chips, is affecting almost every category of consumer electronics, including VR.

The same cause that is inflating your PC

This is exactly the story that has taken DDR5 to nearly five times its price of a year ago. Memory makers are diverting production capacity toward HBM, the memory AI accelerators consume, because the margin is far higher. Everything with DRAM inside now competes for what is left: laptops, phones, consoles and VR headsets.

A standalone headset like the Quest carries its own memory on board, so it was as exposed as any PC. That Meta passed the cost on in April 2026, and not earlier, says more about how long the margin absorbed it than about any change to the product.

What to do with this

If the VR you care about is PC VR, the Quest increase is a warning rather than an obstacle: the same inflation is reaching the memory in your own machine, and the order you buy things in matters more than usual this year.

Before deciding, two checks that cost nothing: whether your processor and graphics card are balanced, because VR punishes imbalance harder than flat gaming does, and whether your power supply can take what you are planning to build. And if the machine will be running long hours, what it will cost you in electricity.
